Novak Djokovic, the world number one, defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the Italian Open 2022 on Sunday, his first championship of the year.
Djokovic, who won his 1000th ATP tour-level match against Casper Ruud in the semi-finals, continued his outstanding form in the final, defeating Greek Tsitsipas 6-0, 7-6(5).
Despite falling behind 4-1 in the second set against Tsitsipas, Djokovic made an incredible comeback, winning five of the next seven games to force a tiebreak, which he won to claim his sixth Italian Open title.
After Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer, Ivan Lendl, and Rafa Nadal, the 34-year-old had a flawless week, becoming only the fifth player in the Open Era to win 1000 tour-level matches.
Iga Swiatek won her sixth consecutive victory in the Italian Open women’s division, defeating Ons Jabeur 6-2, 6-2.
