Despite a scarcity of flour supply, the federal cabinet approved the import of 3 million metric tones of wheat, causing a crisis for the newly constituted government.
The decision was made by a cabinet meeting convened by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, according to the state television. Marriyum Aurangzeb, the Information Minister, said the premier has ordered the introduction of an incentivized agricultural strategy to reduce wheat imports.
The Sharif-led administration also opted to keep the Ramadan package’s set grain and sugar prices.
Three million tons of wheat were previously approved for import by the Economic Coordination Committee. Wheat imports are projected to cost around $1.2 billion, not including transportation and handling costs.
