Almas Haider, the Chief Executive Officer of the Engineering Development Board (EBD), revealed on Saturday that a record 50 million smart and feature phones were made in Pakistan in a single year for the first time in history.
Speaking to the media in Lahore, he stated that during the period under consideration, 22 million smart mobile phones were built, of which 99 percent have been sold in the market, while 28 million feature mobile phones were constructed, of which 97 percent have been bought. He claimed that, by a press statement we received, mobile phone parts worth $1.12 million were imported into Pakistan by the assemblers. A total of 31 domestic and international mobile phone businesses received licenses; 21 are currently in operation, while the remaining 10, including Nokia, are building up manufacturing facilities. He claimed that only one foreign company, which is now establishing a plant in Pakistan, imported 3.8 million feature phones during this time.
