On Thursday, they commemorate Shaheed Havaldar Lalak Jan, also known as Nishan-e-Haider, who died 23 years ago.
Shaheed Lalak Jan received the Nishan-e-Haider, the nation’s highest honour, in recognition of his commitment and bravery during the 1999 Kargil War.
When the Kargil War started in 1999, he was a member of the Northern Light Infantry Regiment and heroically led the charge to repel powerful Indian assaults.
Lalak Jan voluntarily offered to be deployed in the front positions in May 1999. On July 7, hostile forces attacked the area with powerful mortar rounds, seriously injuring him.
Despite his wounds, he remained in place and repelled the Indian attack, but he eventually passed away from them.
