US President Joe Biden gives a speech at the White House during an Eid al-Fitr event. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the White House Eid celebration was hosted digitally last year. Arooj Aftab, a Grammy-winning Pakistani artist based in Brooklyn, was also present at the event.
At the ceremony, Aftab also spoke. At the White House Eidal Fitr event on Monday afternoon, Aftab spoke alongside US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.
The Grammy-winning singer, who was born in Pakistan, recited The Promise by Rumi, a 13th-century Sufi mystic and poet, during her speaking segment. “I am the president now,” Aftab joked as he posted the photo to Instagram. Here’s where you may hear Aftab speak:
President Joe Biden and first wife Jill Biden sent greetings to Muslims around the world on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, which celebrates the completion of Ramazan, the Muslim holy month.
For most Muslim-majority countries, the first day of Eid is Monday.
“As Muslims in the United States and throughout the world celebrate Eidul Fitr to mark the conclusion of Ramazan, Jill and I extend our warmest greetings to all who are celebrating this wonderful event,” Biden said in a statement.
